Motivational theory-Abraham Maslow
Researched the needs of humans how how they behave and why
Argued most actions were governed by needs and we are motivated to satisfy a hierarchy of needs
Discovered that if one need is met it leads to another need, if needs are met production levels increase
Within the workplace if all needs of a member of staff are met then the next and so on then reaches self actualisation which is growth and development if managers find out which category their workers are in it can be used to decide rewards.
Motivational drivers
Motivation: the reason for acting or behaving in a certain way

Fredrick Helzberg
-in 1996 Herzberg interviewed some employees about parts of their job that gave them strong feeling of dissatisfaction or satisfaction
-found motivation and basic needs had to be met the most
-he named basic needs hygiene factors
-hygiene factors can keep them in their present job but not motivate them to work harder
-if these factors aren’t met then workers become dissatisfied and productivity falls
Hygiene Factors
salary = achievement
security = recognition
working condtions = variety of work
role in the business = responsibility
company policy = promotions
