2.5 Transport Systems In Plants Flashcards
What does the xylem tissue do?
Transports water and mineral ions from the roots of the plant to the stem, leaves and flowers
What is the transpiration stream?
The movement of water from the roots through the xylem tissue and out of the leaves
What tissue carries dissolved sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant?
Phloem
What does phloem do?
Carries food, such as dissolved sugars, from the leaves to the rest of the plant
Name 4 factors that affect transpiration rates
- wind
- temperature
- humidity
- light intensity
Explain how wind affects the transpiration rate
The faster the wind speed, the air is moving faster, meaning the water in the air is moving faster, meaning the concentration gradient of the water remains the same
What tissue in a plant carries water and mineral ions from the roots to the stem, leaves and flowers?
Xylem
Explain how high temperatures affect transpiration rate
Gives the particles in transpiration more energy so the diffusion happens faster
Explain how low humidity affects transpiration rates
There is less water in the air so their is a steeper concentration gradient so osmosis can happen without using active transport and using energy
Explain how high light intensity affects the rate of transpiration
The light heats up the plant, so the stomata open so water is lost more
