2.5 Study Guide Flashcards
Adhesion
The action of Hydrogen bonding with Water molecules and other substances.
cohesion
The attraction of water to other water molecules
solvent
dissolves solutes to create solutions.
Specific heat
the amount of energy it takes to heat up 1g of a substance by 1 degree celcius.
heat of vaporization
Energy it takes for 1 gram of water to evaporate to become water vapor. hydrogen bonds must break for this to happen.
concentration
the amount of grams per liter in a solution
pH
Potential Hydrogen
pOH
Potential Hydroxide
Hydroxide Ion
OH-
Hydronium Ion
H3O+
acid
a substance with a pH lessa than 7 and has more hydronium than hydroxide.
base
A substane with a pH that’s more than y7and has more hydroxide than hydronium.
Five properties of water
Adhesion+Cohesion, Solvent of life, Ice floats, Specific heat, and Heat of vaporization
Adhesion and Cohesion
The polarity of water allows this to happen because we see it is able to attach to itself but also other substances because of the H ion.
Solvent of life
The polarity of the water makes H2O a good solvent because many times if it is hydrophilic it will dissolve nicely in water.
Ice floatin
The way this is ale to happen is how the H2O bonds to itself to make the ice. It’s not as tightly n=bonded together as water making it less dense even though its a solid.
Specific heat
The polarity of the H2O creates the ability of the water to heat up without vaporizing fully whci means its hydrogen bonds are breaking and reforming.
Heat of Vaporization
The polarity of the H2O Aloows the hydrogen bonds to fully break at the heat of vaportization which is how we find it.
Why is it important to living things?
It’s important to living things especially humans because most of our body is made up of water.
What is the [H3O+], [OH-}, and pOH when the pH is 6?
the [H30+] is 10^-8, the [OH-] is 10^-6 and the pOH is 8.
Given the pH of 5 is the solution neutral, acidic, or basic?
acidic
given the pOH of 6 is the solution neutral, acidic, or basic?
