2.5 Impact or Poor lifestyle choices Flashcards
What are the effects of smoking?
CO binds to haemoglobin
Damaged alveoli
Damaged cilia
Nicotine constricts the bronchioles
Irritation of trachea and bronchi
What are the effects of smoking on the respiratory centre?
decreases amount of gaseous exchange as alveoli walls become damaged and break down and join together forming larger air spaces than normal
csn cause lung cancer, damages cilia, build-up of tar in lungs
What are the effects of smoking on oxygen transport?
CO binds with haemoglobin in rbc more readily than O₂
This reduces oxygen carrying capacity of the blood as less oxygen can bind to haemoglobin
Damaged alveoli walls reduces efficiency of gaseous exchange
What are the overall effects of smoking on sport and physical activity?
Will cause breathlessness during exercise as less oxygen can be transported to wokring muscles
Less oxygen can be diffused into blood capillaries, further decreasing the oxygen transported to the working muscles. Therefore sporting performer will tire quicker
Explain how smoking can negatively impact the respiratory system
can cause lung disease by damaging airways and alveoli found in lungs
Lung diseases cause by smoking include COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis
Results in performer fatiguing much faster ultimately having negative effect on performance
