2.5- hydrocarbons Flashcards
What can an electrophilic addition reaction be used to produce?
-unsaturated oils can be made saturated.
-hardens the oil to make edible fate such as butter
Define polymerisation
The joining of monomers to form a large polymer chain
electrophillic addition
An alkene is converted into a halogenoalkane.
What type of polymerisation do alkanes and alkenes undergo ?
ADDITION POLYMERISATION
test for alkenes x2
bromine water - brown to colourless
purple potassium manganate- purple to colourless
How does the major product of an addition reaction occur ?
the halogen will bond to the Carbon surrounded by the most alkyl groups.
More stable due to a delocalised positive charge spread from the surrounding groups.
Describe the bonding in an alkene
sigma bonds - s and p overlap
pi bonds - sideways p-p overlap
What is the pi bond ?
- A sideways overlap of the p orbitals.
