What happens to melting and boiling temp as chain length increases ?
Increases, an increase in vanderwaals forces means more energy is required to break the bonds
What happens to melting and boiling point as n.o branches increase ?
Decreases as branches increase, there is a decrease in the contact between molecules meaning less energy is needed to break bonds.
What happens to solubility as chain length increases ?
Solubility decreases as alcohol and carboxyl chain length increases, this is due to the increase in the hydrophobic carbon chain.
Define Structural isomerism
A compound with the same chemical formula, but different structure.
Define Chain isomerism
A compound with the same chemical formula, but different number of branches.
Define Functional isomerism
A compound with a different functional group.
Define positional isomerism
When the functional group is in a different location
