2.5 Flashcards
What is the goldilocks zone?
the orbital range of distance around a star where water would be liquid on earth like planet, and Earth like life would be possible.
What are the trends of graphs?
As orbital radius increases, the orbital period increases at a faster rate. Graph gently curves upwards
What are relative units?
Used when comparing distances in the solar system
What is the time taken for light to travel from the sun to earth
500 seconds
What is the time taken for light to travel from Alpha Centauri to earth?
4.5 years
What is the time taken for light to travel from the Andromeda galaxy to earth?
Over 2 million years
What is the time taken for light to travel from the moon to earth
1.3 seconds
What is the sequence of a massive stars?
Nebula, protostar, main sequence star, red super giant, super nova, neutron star or black holes
What is the sequence of a giant star?
Nebula, protostar, main sequence star, red giant, white dwarf, black dwarf
What is the accretion disk?
Gas and dust around the protostar that became out sun is the birth place of the planets
What are the 2 forces at acting inside a star?
The inward force of gravity, and outward combination of gas and radiation pressure
What is gas pressure caused by?
Rapid random motion of particles in the sun
What is radiation pressure caused by?
Light hitting the particles
What happens if the pressure in the middle of a star falls?
Star will shrink
What are the star groups on a HR diagram?
Y axis= luminosity in solar units
X axis= temperature in Kelvin runs backwards (red= coolest) (blue= hottest)
