Midsagittal plane
The midline Sagittal plane that divides the body into equal right and left halves.
Sagittal plane
Any longitudinal plane that divides the body into right and left parts.
Coronal plane
Any longitudinal plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior parts.
Mid coronal plane
The coronal plane that divides the body into equal anterior and posterior parts.
Horizontal (axial) plane
Any transverse plane that passes through the body at right angles to a longitudinal plane, dividing the body into superior and inferior portions.
Oblique plane
A longitudinal or transverse plane that is at an angle or a slant and is not parallel to the sagittal, coronal, or horizontal plane.

Anterior view.
Cephalad
Pertaining to the head
Caudad or caudal
Pertaining to away from the head (tail).
Superior
Refers to near the head or situated above.
Inferior
Refers to away from the head or situated below.
What are body planes used for in radiographic positioning?
To center a body part to the IR or CR and to ensure body part is properly orientated and aligned with the IR
What are body planes used for in CT, MRI, and US?
To identify the orientation of anatomic cuts or slices demonstrated in the procedure.
Posterior or dorsal
The back half of the patient.
