What was the origin and meaning of Tory conservatism?
Toryism originated in Ireland in the 1680s and understands society as a organic hierarchy. Torys see tradition as something deep that protects society, and see humans as inherently self-interested and ruled by passions and not fully rational.
What are the differences between Whigs and Torys?
Torys are reactionaries who sought a return to Catholicism where as Whigs followed more of a Locke-ian approach supporting a more parliamentary and protestant approach.
What do Torys think of prejudice and habit?
Torys believe that prejudice and habit are vital aspects of social life and key to instilling traditional reasoning into human beings.
What is the Tory and traditional Conservative idea of human nature?
That humans are self-interested, irrational, and naturally embedded in society with tradition and family to guide us.
What is the original sin to conservatives?
Conservatives believe that the story of Adam and Eve has truth to it, and that just like how Adam and Eve reached for the apple even though they were told not to, humans will always reach for more unless kept in line by the organic hierarchy.
How is an organic hierarchy in society of value to a Tory?
Organic hierarchy helps to maintain tradition and keep societal order by having each level of authority serve as a different “thread” on the fabric of society.
What is the Tory or traditional conservative view of freedom?
Freedom is understood by maximizing social harmony and order through the service of an individual to maintaining societal order.
How do Torys and traditional conservatives understand the agent, obstacle, and goal?
The agent is interconnected individuals, the obstacle is radical ideas and lack of constraint on desires, and the goal is a stable and harmonious society.
Compare conservative and liberal ideas of private property and natural aristocracy.
Conservatives and liberals agree that private property should be upheld but disagree on the matter of natural aristocracy because conservatives believe that the aristocracy should be upheld where as liberals want it replaced.
What makes toryism and traditional conservatism a response to French Revolution?
The father of traditional conservatism, Edmund Burke, based much of his theories off of what he saw as a misguided and savage revolution. His entire stance is a reaction to the revolution.
What is the difference between traditional conservatives and reactionary conservatives?
Traditional conservatives are concerned with upholding tradition and societal order where as reactionaries are more concerned with turning back the clock and to restore society as it used to be.
What do Torys think about societal progress?
Torys are open to process but believe it must been done gradually and with only slight changes.
