2.4 Fragrances & Skincare Flashcards
Fragrances- Essential Oils
Define “Essentail Oils”
COncentrated extracts of the volatile, non-water-soluble aroma compuds from plants. The oils have the aroma of the plant from whcihc they are extracted
Fragrences- Terpenes
What is a Terpene?
Unsaturated compounds formed by joining together isoprene units
Fragrances: Terpenes
What is a “Terpenoid”
A terpene that has been oxidized
Fragrances- Terpenes
Systematic name for isoprene
2-methylbuta-1,3-diene
Skincare- UV
Define Ultraviolet Radiation (UV)
High energy form of light, present in sunlight. Exposure to UV light can result in molecules gaining sufficient energy for bonds to be broken.
Skincare- Sunblock
How does “Sun-block” protect the skin?
Physically blocks UV light from reaching the skin & contain Free Radical Scavangers
Skincare- Free Radicals
Define “Free Radical”
A highly reactive species with an unpaired electron
Skincare- Free Radicals
What are the stages of a Free Radical Chain Reaction
- Initiation
- Propagation
- Termination
Skincare- Free Radicals
What does the initiation stage look like?
Left: No Free Radicals
Right: 2 Free Radicals
Cl2 —> 2Cl.
Skincare- Free Radicals
What does the propagation stage look like?
Left: 1 Free Radical
RIght: 1 Free Radical
H2 + Cl. —>H. + HCl
Skincare- Free Radicals
What does the termination stage look like?
Left: 2 Free radicals
Right: 0 free radicals
H. + Cl. —> HCl
Skincare: Free Radicals
What is a “Free Radical Scavenger”?
Molecules that can react with Free Radicals to form stable molecules & prevent chain reactions by providing them with electrons
