2.4 - Atkinson-Shiffrin and Memory Flashcards
Sensory Memory
a store of memory which very briefly stores raw information detected by the senses
Sensory Memory: Capacity and Duration
C: unlimited
D: 0.2-4 seconds (couple seconds)
Sensory Memory: Iconic Memory
sensory register for visual information
Sensory Memory: Echoic Memory
sensory register for auditory information
STM
a store of memory that holds a limited amount of information that is consciously being attended to and actively manipulated
STM: Capacity and Duration
C: 5-9 items
D: 18-30 seconds
LTM
a store of memory in which a potentially unlimited amount of information is stores for a relatively permanent amount of time
LTM: Capacity and Duration
C: unlimited
D: relatively permanent
Encoding
converting information into a useable form
-between STM -> LTM
Consolidation
neurobiological process of making a newly formed memory stable and enduring following a learning experience
Storage
retaining information for a long period of time
Retrieval
accessing information that has been previously stores and bringing it back to conscious awareness
- between LTM -> STM
Strengths: AS
*Distinguishes between the different stores involved in memory
*Outlines that each memory store has a different capacity and duration
*Provides a good understanding of the structure and process of memory
Limitations: AS
*May be considered oversimplified
*STM is more complex than the model suggests
*Model ignores factors such as motivation and strategy which can facilitate learning and assist in encoding information from STM and LTM
