2.3.6 Gene Expression Flashcards
Why do cells become specialised?
Because only some genes are switched on and produce active mRNA which is translated into proteins within the cell
What is the structure and function of each cell type dependant on?
The proteins that it synthesises
What happens to beta galactosidase when lactose isn’t present?
A lactose repressor molecule binds to the DNA and prevents transcription
What happens to beta galactosidase when lactose is present?
The repressor molecule is prevented from binding to the DNA and the gene is exposed
What is FOP?
Genes are expressed that produce all the proteins needed to become a specialised bone cell. White blood cells cause muscle to express other genes, causing them to turn into bone
