2.3.1 Eukaryotic Cells Flashcards
What is the function of the nucleus?
It contains DNA
What is the function of the nucleolus?
It produces ribosomes which move out of the nucleus to the RER
What is the function of the Ribosomes?
It’s the site of protein synthesis. mRNA moves along the ribosomes
What is the function of the Rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Proteins are synthesised on the ribosomes and collect on the RER, ready for transport.
What is the function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
Lipid and steroid synthesis
What is the function of the mitochondria?
It provides energy to the cell so it can move and divide
What is the function of the centrioles?
- Allows the mitochondria to move around a cell (cytoskeleton)
- Form spindles in mitosis
What is the function of the lysosomes?
They digest bacteria
What is the function of the Golgi apparatus?
They pack proteins for transport
