23.1 Genetic Variation Flashcards
What is Genetic Variation?
Differences among individuals in the composition of their genes.
What is Gene Variability?
It’s the measure of the tendency of individual genotypes in a population to vary from one another.
What is Nucleotide Variability?
More nucleotides = more proteins = more genetic variation
What is Geographic Variation?
It refers to differences among populations of traits across the natural geographic range of a species. (The primary source of subspeciation).
What is Cline?
The gradual change in certain characteristics exhibited by members of a series of adjacent populations of organisms of the same species.
Selection can only operate if ______ alleles exist for a given locus. (Single or Multiple)
Selection can only operate if MULTIPLE alleles exist for a given locus.
True or False: Mutations that occur in somatic cells are lost when the individual dies.
True!
True or False: Mutation rates tend to be slow in prokaryotes, and faster in plants and animals.
