2.3 Thermodynamics Flashcards
What is temperature?
A measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a system
What is temperature more accurately described as?
As a property of a system that determines whether it is in thermal, equilibrium
What will happen until thermal equilibrium is reached?
Heat will flow from the hotter body to the colder one?
What is thermal equilibrium?
When 2 bodies are equal in temperature
What is a thermometer?
A temperature-measuring instrument
What are the 3 different types of thermometers?
-Bulb thermometer
-Bimetallic thermometer
-Thermistor
What are thermocouples used to measure?
High temperature
What do bulb thermometers contain?
Mercury or any other fluid with a linear rate of expansion with rising temperature
Why is water not used in bulb thermometers?
As it would freeze at temps below 0 degrees C and evaporate at temps over 100 degrees C
What does a Bimetallic thermometer show temperature as?
Mechanical displacement
How does a Bimetallic thermometer measure temperature?
Using a bimetallic strip
