2.2 Statics Flashcards
What is force measured in, in the metric system?
Newtons
What is force measure in, in the imperial system?
Pounds
What is the equation for force?
Force = Mass x Acceleration
F (N) = m (kg) x a (m/s^2)
What is moment?
A turning effect produced by a force acting at a distance with respect to an object’s fulcrum
What is the formula for moment?
Moment = Force applied to the body x Perpendicular distance
M (Nm) = F (N) x s (m)
What are opposing moments?
Total moments that act against each other and are applied at points separated by a distance
What is a couple?
A pair of forces that are equal magnitude and opposite in direction
What are the 2 equations for couples?
T = F x s
T = F x r x 2
T= torque applied by a couple (Nm)
F = one of the forces (N)
s = distance between the forces (m)
r = radius (distance from a force to centre of rotation) (m)
What is the resultant?
The effect that results from 2 or more vectors of the same type of quantity acting on an object
What do Scalar quantities have and not have?
Magnitude but no direction
What is the equation for stress?
Stress (Pa or N/m^2)= Force (N) / area (m^2)
What are the 5 basic structural stresses?
-Tension
-Compression
-Shear
-Bending
-Torsion
What is Stress?
A quantity that describes the magnitude of forces that cause deformation
What is Strain?
The deformation of a material due to stress
What is the equation for Strain?
Strain = Change in length / Original length of material
