Supreme Court
The highest court in the land and the only part of the federal judiciary specifically required by the Constitution
District Court
The trial courts of the federal court system. The district courts can hear most federal cases, including civil and criminal cases
Court of Appeals (Appellate Court)
Hears appeals from lower courts of both civil and criminal trials, but does not investigate facts of a case, just if the law had been fairly and correctly applied
Precedent
A court decision that is considered an authority for subsequent cases with similar facts or legal issues
Writ of Certiorari
A request that the Supreme Court orders a lower court to deliver its case record for review
Majority Opinion
A judicial opinion agreed on by more than half the members of a court
Dissenting Opinion
An opinion written by an appellate judge or supreme court justice who disagrees with the majority opinion
Judicial Review
The authority of the Supreme Court and federal courts to interpret the Constitution
Concurrent Jurisdiction
Where two or more courts from different systems simultaneously have jurisdiction over a specific case
