2.3 - Reproduction Flashcards
All body cells, except gametes, are
Diploid
Gametes are
Haploid sex cells, having only one of each pair of chromosomes normally present in a diploid cell
Diploid means
The normal number of chromosomes in a cell. In humans this is 23 pairs (46).
Haploid means
Half the normal number of chromosomes in a cell. In humans this is 23.
Male gametes are made in
Testes (animals)/ anthers (plants)
Male gametes are called
Sperm (animals) / pollen (plants)
Female gametes are made in
Ovaries (animals)/ ovaries (Plants)
Female gametes are called
Eggs (animals) / ovules (plants)
Fertilisation is
The fusion of two haploid gamete nuclei to produce a diploid zygote, which divides to form an embryo.
