2.3 Oxygenation Concept Analysis Flashcards
Define oxygenation
mechanism that facilitates the body’s ability to supply oxygen to the cells of the body
List the 4 components of oxygenation
- Ventilation (inhalation & exhalation)
- Respiration (Gas exchange in alveoli)
- Transport (Attached to hemoglobin)
- Perfusion (Blood flow delivery to tissue/cells)
Developmental risk factors for infants with alterations in oxygen
fetal hemoglobin (shortened life span of RBC)
Developmental risk factors for infants & young children with alterations in oxygen
narrow branching of peripheral airways, less alveolar surface area fir gas exchange
Developmental risk factors for older adults with alterations in oxygen
loss of elastic recoil, less effective cough, decreased alveolar surface area, decreased pulmonary capillary network, changes in immune system
List some risk factors of altercations of oxygenation
age, exposure to air pollution, allergies
Tobacco use
Aspiration
Altered oropharyngeal flora
bed rest, prolonged immobility
Chronic diseases (CF, COPD, HF)
Immunosuppression
Causes of altered oxygenation
Impaired ventilation
Altered transport of oxygen
Inadequate perfusion
Define impaired ventilaition
- inadequate muscle or nerve function
- Narrowed airways
- Poor gas diffusion in alveoli
Define transport of oxygen
Insufficient RBC
Define inadequate perfusion
- Reduce CO
- Peripheral blood vessel constriction/obstruction
Example of acid-base balance
respiratory acidosis
Example of cellular regulation regarding oxygenation
anemias
Example of cognition regarding oxygenation
decreased oxygen to brain tissues (confusion)
Example of comfort regarding oxygenation
decreased oxygen to tissues cause ischemia (pain)
Example of perfusion regarding oxygenation
decreased tissue perfusion, oxygen deficit to organs
