2.3 Geomorphic Processes Flashcards
Where do geomorhic processes occur?
Above and on or within the earths surface
What is geomorphology?
Study of landforms and processes that shape them
What is an exogenetic process?
Process above or on the earths surface. SLOW
What is an endogenetic process?
Process within earth. SUDDEN or RAPID
What are the exogenetic processes?
Weather, erosion/degradation, transportation, deposition/aggradation and mass movement
What is denudation?
Process of exposing deposits
What are the weathering types?
Mechanical/physical, chemical, biological
How does mechanic/physical weathering occur?
Source material is broken upon by mechanical actions
How does Chemical weathering occur?
Source material modified by chemical reaction
How does Biological weathering occur?
From action of organic material
What are the types of mechanical weathering?
Unloading/pressure release, abrasion, thermal, cyclic, wetting/drying
How does unloading/pressure release cause weathering?
When exposed/uplifted, pressure on rock deposits decrease, rock expands, joints form!
How is abrasion weathering?
Overtime, rock particles are grinding away at the rock structure
How does thermal/temperature cause weathering?
Frost wedging - expansion of ice joints, cyclic temperatures - rock shatters in extreme temps
How does weeding/drying cause weathering?
Expansion and shrinking of clay materials(sedimentary rock), which eventually breaks up
