23- Cervical anatomy Flashcards
What are some places that neck pain can come from?
Disc,musce,ligamnent, bone, nerve
What can happen to the cervical vertebrae curvature when anterior and posterior muscles spasm?
It can straighten
What can occur to the intervertebral foramen in sudden extension of the vertebrae?
It can narrow and press on the DRG and spinal cord
What is lig flavum made out of that’s different than the other ligaments?
Elastic cart- allows a lot of stretching
What will a rear ending injury do to the whole spinal column?
Extension of spine prmarily, then whip into hyperflexion
What are your fingers contacting in suboccipitalrelease?
Skin, subQ fascia, deep investing fascia, traps, semispinalis capitis, splenius capitis, splenius cervicus, suboccipital muscle (RCPMi/Mj, OCS/I)
What does rectus capitus posterior minor connect to in the head?
Dura
What nerve pierces the semispinalis capitis?
Greater occipital nerve
What does the lesser occipital nerve travel?
Up over the head with the greater occipital nerve
What curves around the OCI?
Vertebral artery
What are some OMT Tx for acute pain?
soft tissue OMT, pain meds
What could be a Dx of a pt who has pain radiate downt he arm when they flex their head?
Herniated disc- the disc moves posteriorly when we flex our neck
When the disc is herniated, what does it press on that causes the radiculopathy?
Nerve root
What can u use for pt’s with herniated disc?
Soft OMT- traction, MFR, ST,CS, still technique, FPR, BLT
Is OMT contraindicated with a pt with a herniated disc?
No
What do u see on an X-ray with a pt with degenerative discs?
bone spurs (where the bodies stick out), arthritis (whiteness) of the facets
What 2 bones form the jugular foramen?
temporal and occipital
Jugular foramen stenosis can cause what in kids?
decreased blood flow in skull, torticollis (XI affected), poor sucking (X). Anything with CN IX-XI
Where does the sternal branch of the SCM have a tigger point?
back of head, around the eyes
Where does the clavicular head of the SCM have trigger points?
above the eyes, ear, behind ear
