2.2.2 Bonding and Structure Flashcards
1
Q
What is ionic bonding?
A
An electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions
2
Q
What is the structure of an ionic lattice?
A
- Lattice of oppositely charged ions
- Regular structure
- Cubic shape
- Giant repeating pattern
3
Q
What are the properties of an ionic compound?
A
- High melting and boiling points due to lots of energy being required to overcome the numerous strong electrostatic forces
- Poor conductor when solid as ions cannot move
- Good conductor when molten or aqueous as ions are free to move
- Soluble as water molecules are polar
4
Q
What is a covalent bond?
A
A strong electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of the bonded atoms
5
Q
What are the 3 types of covalent bonding?
A
- Single
- Multiple
- Dative
6
Q
What is dative covalent bonding?
A
- When one atom donates two electrons to an atom or ion to form a bond
- Donated electrons were originally a lone pair
- Represented by an arrow pointing from the atom that donated the electrons
7
Q
What is the term average bond enthalpy used for?
A
A measurement of covalent bond strength
