2.2.1 Photosynthesis : A kodak moment Flashcards
What is photosynthesis ?
A biochemical pathway
What is the purpose of photosynthesis ?
For plants to get glucose from light energy
What cells does photosynthesis occur in?
Plants, bacteria and protozoal cells
What organelle does photosynthesis occur in?
chloroplasts
What are the parts of the chloroplast and their functions?
Stroma - space outside the granum
Outer membrane
Inner membrane
Thylakoid - discs
Lamella
Granum - stacks of discs
What is glucose and it’s function?
Glucose is a sugar, it can be broken down to form ATP . It makes glucose which is easy to store ( compared to ATP )
Glucose is used by plants for energy and to create their structure
How is glucose created?
Chloroplasts harness energy from the sun to convert CO2 and water into glucose.
A byproduct is oxygen , which is released into the atmosphere.
By doing photosynthesis , they convert the CO2 in the atmosphere into oxygen
Photosynthesis equation
12H2O + 6CO2 -> C6H12O6 + 6H2O+6O2
What does the equation tell us for photosynthesis?
If we combine water molecules with carbon dioxide molecules we can make glucose and oxygen.
There is H2O on each side of the equation . Allowing the waters to cancel each other out . the new formula is
6H2O + 6CO2 -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
