2.2 Plant growth and development Flashcards
1
Q
What increases during growth?
A
Height
Girth
Weight
Dry mass
2
Q
Two processes of growth:
A
Active division of cells
Expansion of individual cells
3
Q
What are the two types of meristems and what do they do?
A
Apical
Lateral
Meristems are the site of active cell division and growth in a plant
4
Q
Features of apical meristem?
A
Occur at growing tips of roots or shoots
Gives height above ground
Gives depth below ground
Primary growth
Leads to formation of permanent tissue.
5
Q
Features of lateral meristem?
A
Allow stems / roots to increase in girth
Secondary growth (aka secondary thickening)
Associated with a tissue called cambium
In a woody dicot stem, cambium is arranged in a ring just underneath the bark
