2.2 network devices/ software defined networking Flashcards
Routes traffic between IP subnets. Makes forwarding decisions based on IP address. Often connects diverse network types (LAN, WAN, Copper, Fiber).
Routers
Bridging done in hardware. Forwards traffic based on data link address. Has many ports and features. May provide Power over Ethernet (PoE).
Switches
Switches that can be operated remotely. Interconnect with other switches via 802.1Q.
Managed switch
Cannot be operated remotely. Very little integration with other devices. Fixed configuration. Low price point.
Unmanaged switch.
Not a wireless router. Extends the wired network onto the wireless network. Usually involves a separate network device with a built-in antenna, transmitter, and adapter.
Access point
Combination of punch-down blocks and
RJ-45 connectors. Cables that run through the walls from the hosts are connected to this device.
Patch Panel
Filters traffic by port number. Can encrypt traffic into/out of the network. Protect your traffic between sites. A common security technique.
Firewall
Power provided on an Ethernet cable. One wire for both network and electricity. Phones, cameras, wireless access points. Useful in difficult-to-power areas. Power provided at the switch.
Power over Ethernet (PoE)
Can provide PoE to a device when a switch does not support PoE.
PoE Injectors
Port for PoE. Provide power to devices connected.
PoE switch
PoE Standards
Minimum power per port provided to the device. Maximum power per port provided by the power sourcing device. Required cable category. Power over pairs. Released date. (See table in book).
Used in networks that use twisted pair cabling to connect devices and can join segments into larger networks. Difficult to find today. Becomes less efficient as network traffic increases. “Multi-port repeater” (Traffic going in one port is repeated to every other port).
Hub
Broadband Transmission across multiple frequencies. High-speed networking Speeds up to 1 Gigabit/s are available. Multiple services, (Data, voice, video).
Cable modem
Use existing phone lines with a DSL modem and a network card.
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
Provides internet access from a fiber network. Connects the ISP fiber network to the copper network.
Optical network terminal (ONT)
