Political autonomy
able to create policies and enforce laws within its borders w/o interference from other states
Sovereignty
Sovereignty: legal concept according to international law recognizes that the authority of the state is not subject to legal control by any other state
sovereignty in the arctic ocean → who “owns” it and gets its resources (oil)?
- Greenpeace tries to stop oil drilling before oil spills in ocean and kills ocean life
-Russian president, American president and Shell all trying to get access

-Researchers think there are a lot of resources in Arctic ocean and as it’s melting, creating new shipping routes and rush from countries for resources
-Countries have to submit claims to the UN (continental shelf) to expand borders and claim resources in Arctic
-Russia’s been building a military in the Arctic and trying to claim power
-Russia takes over remote lands (coal mine) and lose money, only because if ocean beside melts, they can claim oil and other resources
Ethnic group
“A social group or category of the population that, in a larger society, is set apart and bound together by common ties of race, language, nationality or culture”
Nation state
“A sovereign state of which most of the citizens or subjects are united also by factors which define a nation, such as language or common descent”
What holds a country together?
Multiple forces working together: (democracy, stable economy)
What tears a country apart?
Less economic opportunity…people get unhappy…starts to tear apart
Country doesn’t have resources to support people after a disaster (war, flood), country tears apart and creates tension
Principle of National Self-determination
the process by which a group of people, usually possessing a certain degree of national consciousness, form their own state and choose their own government
Shatter belt
A central area of power, and then a zone around that area that’s less stable because it’s caught between those 2 larger powers, known as shatter belt

ussr and USA in the middle of the cold war and cuba was in the middle
Communism
Getting away from a society that has class levels and government
populism
ideology that claims to express the will of the people which some enemy is supposedly oppressing
(when people lose trust in the government they can push for people in power who act, look or share similar beliefs in hopes of creating a government that’s more sympathetic to their economic or political situation
nationalism
ideology of uniting people of the state (can have a dark side)
How can people in power use borders to their advantage?
People in power (stalin) put borders and divided countries (the -stan countries) in a way that would keep him in power
