2.2 Cellular Respiration Flashcards
What is glycolysis?
The breakdown of glucose to pyruvate in the cytoplasm
What happens in the first stage of glycolysis?
2 ATP is used to phosphorylate glucose and intermediates
What happens in the second stage of glycolysis?
The generation of more ATP, resulting in a net gain of 2 ATP
What needs to be present for the krebs cycle to occur?`
Oxygen
What does acetyl combine with during the start of the kreb cycle?
Coenzyme A
What does acetyle coenzyme A combine with to make citrate?
Oxaloacetate
Where does the kreb cycle occur?
The matrix of the mitochondria
What enzyme removes hydrogen ions and electrons?
Dehydrogenase
What coenzyme does dehydrogenase pass hydrogen ions and electrons on to?
Coenzyme NAD, forming NADH
Where does the electron transport chain occur?
Inner mitochondrial membrane
Where does the energy for ATP synthesis come from?
High-energy electrons passing along the ETC
What would take place if oxygen was absent during respiration?
Fermentation
Where does fermentation take place?
In the cytoplasm
What is the end product of fermentation in animals?
Lactate
What is the end product of fermentation in plants and yeast?
Ethanol and CO₂
