2.2 Cells Arise From Other Cells Flashcards
What is mitosis for?
Growth
Replacement of cells
Reproduction of single cells ex organisms
What does mitosis produce?
2 genetically identical daughter cells from one genetically identical parent cell
Interphase
90% of the cell cycle is during interphase
DNA replication occurs
Produced 2 sister chromatids joined by a centromere
Prophase
Nucleolus disappears and nuclear envelope breaks down
Chromosomes first become visible because they condense
Centrioles move to opposite poles of the cell
Spindle fibers form from the centrioles forming a spindle apparatus
Metaphase
Spindle fibres attach to the centromeres between the sister chromatids
The chromosomes are pulled along the spindle apparatus, alining themselves along the equator of the cell
Anaphase
The centromeres divide
The spindle fibres contract, pulling the chromotides to opposite poles of the cell
Telophase
The cytoplasm divides - cytokinesis
The nucleolus reappears and the nuclear envelop reforms
Spindle fibers disintegrate
What cells undergo mitosis?
All of them except gametes
