What is a blog?
A website that is typically ran by an individual or small group. It is regularly updated and informal, in the style of a conversation
Advantages of blogs
Anyone can create one
Regularly updated so content stays fresh and relevant
Can help to build a sense of community
Disadvantages of blogs
May have limited audience
Audience could give negative feedback which may be damaging to the campaign
Many blogs out there so may be hard to stand out
What is viral messaging?
Content that people share so that it rapidly becomes widespread across social media in order to amplify the campaigns message
Advantages of viral messaging
Can reach a large audience in a small amount of time
Can generate high levels of engagement
Could create a sense of community and encourage users to create their own message surrounding the topic
Disadvantages of viral messaging
May be a short term method
Message may be controversial or misinterpreted causing backlash and negative publicity
May require time and resources
What is social networking?
Using social media platforms to share the message and promote the cause of the campaign. Could include, Instagram, twitter, Facebook, TikTok
Advantages of social networking
Can target specific demographics
Can be cost effective
Allows for engagement and direct interaction with the audience
Disadvantages of social networking
Could receive negative feedback — public criticisms could harm the reputation of the campaign
Misinformation can easily circulate on social media
If campaign already lacks support, it may be hard to depend on the algorithm to promote it
What is poster advertising?
Creating posters that advertise the campaigns message and goals. They are visual displays that can attract a persons attention and they are often placed in high traffic areas
Advantages of poster advertising
Usually cost effective
Useful for smaller or newer campaigns
Relatively quick and simple to create and share
Disadvantages of poster advertising
Can only put a limited amount of information on a poster
Weather may damage poster over time
Can be difficult to find the right spot where people will pay attention to the poster
What is radio advertising?
Ads that are broadcast on radio stations. They involve audio messages outlining the details of the campaign and they allow the campaigners to reach a new demographic
Advantages of radio advertising
Allows people to target a certain audience
Can be cost effective
Have a high reach as many listen to the radio
Disadvantages of radio advertising
No visuals so it’s harder to grab people’s attention
People don’t often pay full attention to the radio as they often have it on as background noise
Many listen however it’s still a limited audience
What is tv advertising?
Creating advertisements that can air on the tv. They include audio and visuals and allow the campaigner to tell a story as well as sharing their message
Advantages of TV advertising
Has a wide reach so message can be widespread
Visuals are much more impactful
Many people trust TV, giving it credibility
Disadvantages of TV advertising
Can be expensive and put a strain on the budget
TV ads are often skipped or ignored
High-quality advertisement takes time and effort
What is film?
They can either be short or long and are used by the campaigner to inform the audience of the problem they are trying to fix
Advantages of films
Have a wide audience reach
Can create an emotional connection with the audience
Can be used to educate people
Disadvantages of films
Can be very time consuming and expensive
Have a risk of misinterpretation
Typically require a longer attention span which could deter some viewers
What is a documentary?
A film that provides detailed and factual insights into the issues that the campaign is trying to promote . They often include real life footage, interviews and the opinions of experts in the field
Advantages of documentaries
Allow for a more comprehensive exploration of issues
Can have a long-lasting impact
Can enhance credibility of the campaign as they often include factual information
Disadvantages of documentaries
Can be time consuming
High production costs
May be a limited audience
What is word of mouth?
Refers to people talking to the people around them in order to share the message of a campaign
Advantages of word of mouth
Effective method as people tend to trust recommendations from friends and family
Can quickly snowball and become a highly talked about topic
Allows people to share their own stories and create a personal connection
Disadvantages of word of mouth
Information may get altered or forgotten about
If someone has negative opinions about the campaign they may share this too
People will likely only share the message with those who have similar views to them
What are events?
Gatherings that are organised with the intention of gaining support and sharing the campaigns message.
Advantages of events
Can increase awareness and draw attention to the campaign
Allows people to talk face to face and build relationships
Campaigners can gather feedback from the audience in real time
Disadvantages of events
Can be very expensive
May only reach a small audience — dependant on who is available and willing
May not always be successful as there may be a low turnout
What are print leaflets?
Flyers that contain information about the campaigns message and goals
Advantages of print leaflets
Can distribute them in specific areas or events where the target audience is likely to be
Accessible as they can reach most people
Cost effective way to spread information
Disadvantages of leaflets?
If it contains too much information people may be discouraged from reading
Leaflets have a short lifespan as people may lose it or throw it away
May be environmental issues
What is merchandise?
Products that are created and sold to promote a campaigns message/cause. This could include items like T-shirts, stickers, bags and hats and they are used to raise money for the campaign and spread awareness
Advantages of merchandise
Can help to create a brand for the campaign which can help people remember and recognise the message
Gets people talking about the cause — can be a conversation starter
Can help to keep the campaign visible
Disadvantages of merchandise
Can be very expensive to produce
Requires people to buy it in order to spread the message which not everyone will be willing to do
If the merchandise is not high quality it can reflect poorly on the campaign
