What is the purpose of police statistics?
To inform the police what crimes to prioritise and to show the public and the government if the police are doing a good job (build trust)
Are police statistics reliable?
Yes — highly accurate
They have procedures/checks that they are following the guidelines
They have shared definitions and categories for crimes
Are police statistics valid?
Somewhat — it is highly accurate for reported crime however it doesn’t include the dark figure
It also covers the whole country which increases validity
Are police statistics ethical?
Yes — doesn’t give out personal details of the crime (anonymous)

What is the purpose of the Crime survey for England and wales?
To allow the public to give their opinion on the police and the justice system
Allows the government to understand the reality of crime and people’s opinions
Is the CSEW reliable?
Somewhat — gives quantitative data, which is more reliable, however doesn’t allow us to get in depth answers like with police statistics
Is the CSEW valid?
Yes as it includes the dark figure of crime
However may not be representative of the population as not everyone fills it out
Is the CSEW ethical?
Yes as it is anonymous
