2.1A DISCOVERY OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS Flashcards
Brownfield Site
Dangerous (unacceptable) level of contaminants in the ground
EPA
Environmental Protection Agency - Runs a federal cleanup program to clean (remediate) known brownfields and some states also run their own brownfield programs.
Remediation
Removing the hazardous waste and pollution from the ground in order for a brownfield site to be reused.
Examples of archaic or banned materials?
Asbestos or lead paint
Abatement
Removal of frayed, loose or friable asbestos.
Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM)
Regulated by EPA/OSHA/State/Local Agencies
Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL)
Standard that sets the number of asbestos fibers to which a worker can be exposed.
National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP)
an EPA regulation that dictates requirement of ACM removal before any remodel or demolition, in order to prevent significant asbestos release into the air.
Asbestos Hazards Emergency Response Act (AHERA)
an EPA regulation that handles asbestos found in K-12 school, and requires that all facilities be inspected to determine the presence and amount of asbestos.
