2.1.5 Redox Flashcards
What is a redox reaction?
Transfer of e- between 2 species
OILRIG?
Oxidation is Loss
Reduction is Gain
What is an oxidising agent?
Gains electrons and is reduced
Reduced = Oxidising agent
What is a reducing agent?
Loses electrons and is oxidised
Oxidised = Reducing agent
How do you find which species has been oxidised/ reduced?
- Write oxidation numbers on both halves
2. See difference and use OILRIG
Oxidation number rules: uncombined elements? e.g. O2
0
Oxidation number rules: ions?
Same as charge
Oxidation number rules: group 1?

Except with F: +2
The oxidation numbers of a compound must add up to _______
The overall charge of the molecule
