2.1.4 Acids Flashcards
What is an acid?
Proton donator
What is a strong acid?
Completely dissociates in aqueous solution and releases lots of H+
What is a weak acid?
Partially dissociates in aqueous solution and releases little of H+
What is a base?
Proton acceptor
What is a strong base?
Completely dissociates in aqueous solution and releases lots of OH-
What is a weak base?
Partially dissociates in aqueous solution and releases little of OH-
What is an alkali?
A base that dissolves in water releasing OH-
What is neutralisation?
H+ and OH- to form H20
How are salts named after a neutralisation reaction?
Metal of base then non- metal of acid
Metal + acid –>
Salt + Hydrogen
Metal hydroxide + acid –>
Salt + Water
Metal oxide + acid –>
Salt + water
Metal carbonate + acid –>
Salt + Carbon Dioxide + Water
What is a titration?
Technique to measure vol of a solution that fully reacts with another
What 2 indicators are used in titrations? Colour changes?
1. Phenolphthalein (phenol-ph-tha-lein) Acid = colourless Alkali = pink 2. Methyl Orange Acid = Yellow Alkali = red
