2.1.1.2 Cell structure - (Microscopes) Flashcards
What are the common stains used with samples in light?
Methylene blue and eosin
What is differential staining?
Its when you stain each structure differently so the structure can be easily identified within a single preparation.
Difference between Wet mount and Dry Mount
Wet mount involve the specimen been in a liquid
Definition of an eyepiece graticule
A measuring device. It is placed in the eyepiece of a microscope and acts as a ruler when you view an object under the microscope.
Definition of stage micrometer
A precise measuring device. It is a small scale that is placed on a microscope stage and its used to work out the value of division on the eyepiece graticule at a particular magnification.
Explain why some samples need to be stained before they can be viewed under a light microscope.
To prevent the object being viewed from appearing completely white if its completely transparent.
Explain why a variety of different stains are used for staining samples?
Particular stains can be used to make particular parts of cells show up.
What is the function of an eyepiece lens?
magnifies and focuses the image from the objective into the eyes
What is the function of an objective lens?
collects light passing through the specimen and produces a magnified image
what is the function of a condenser lens?
focuses the light onto the specimen held between the cover slip and the slide.
What is the function of the iris diaphragm?
is closed slightly to produce a narrow beam of light.
