2.1 Strength Training Flashcards
What is general strength?
the general ability to exert force using the body’s musculature
What is specific strength?
the ability to express that strength in a specific task (ex. competition squat in powerlifting)
What is training for life?
training for enhanced ADL’s and function
disease and disability prevention
Why do we do strength training for Cardiac rehab?
- it’s proven to be safe with appropriate screening and individualized prescription
- vocations and ADL’s
- decreased morbidity; increased independent function with aging
- increased metabolism, which is directly related to muscle mass
In what ways is strength training better than aerobic training for cardiac rehab patients?
- Successful aging (prevention of disability, falls)
- Injury prevention/rehabilitation
Improving bone density - Enhancement of movement mechanics
- Possible reduction in fall risk
What is better - complex whole body movements or isolation exercises?
complex whole body movements
What results in better performance? High intensity strength training or low intensity strength training?
High intensity strength training
What are the contraindications to strength training in cardiac patients?
- Unstable angina
- Uncontrolled hypertension SBP >= 160, DBP >= 100)
- Uncontrolled dysrhythmias
- Recent episode of decompensated congestive heart failure (acute flare-up)
- acute flare-up
- orthopnea
- sudden weight gain
- Severe stenotic or regurgitant valvular disease
- Recent sternotomy (<6-12 weeks)
- Any symptoms which may indicate decline in clinical status (unstable disease)
- Aortic dissection
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
