Q

Why could Britain be optimistic about the progress of its staple industries, even if other nations were making faster progress?

A

Despite competition from Germany steel and coal output were still rising

  • 1870 - 100 million tonnes of coal
  • 1913 – 287 million tonnes of coal

**Germany and America had larger markets and access to raw materials so it would have been concerning if GB had been taken over by comparable countries
