21 - Running with the Red Queen Flashcards
What is true predation?
prey is killed
What is grazing?
prey is partially consumed
What is parasitism?
resources are taken from prey
What is the effects of competition
species 1 - negative
species 2 - negative
What is mutualism?
Organisms of different species interact with mutual benefits
What is co-evolution?
Change in the genetic composition of once species in response to a genetic change in another
When does co-evolution occur?
- a tight ecological relationship (specificity)
- reciprocal natural selection
When is it co-evolution, and not parallel?
- when it it happening in a repeating loop
What is parallel evolution?
species A affects the fitness of species B
What are the two types of coevolution?
- mutualistic - adaptation in each species increases the fitness of the other species
- antagonistic - adaptation in each species reduces the fitness of other species
What can antagonistic evolution lead to?
- cycles
- escalation / arms race
What is red queen coevolution?
have to keep evolving as fast as possible to stay in the same place as before as the other species is continuing to evolve
Are selection pressures equal in an arms race?
- no
- stronger selection on species being killed than those loosing food
