2.1 rocks Flashcards
Rock
A natural occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals and organic matter.
Rock cycle
A continual process by which new rocks form from old rock material.
Weathering
Water wind ice and heat break down rock.
Erosion
Sediment is removed from its source.
Deposition
The process in which material is laid down.
Uplift
A movement within Earth that cause rocks inside the Earth that cause rocks inside the Earth to be moved to the Earths surface.
Composition
The chemical makeup of rock describes their minerals or other materials in the rock.
Texture
The quality of a rock that is based on the sizes shapes and positions of the rocks grains.
Sedimentary rock
Grains of sand and other sediment are eroded from hills and mountains and wash down rivers into the ocean.
Metamorphic rock
Large pieces of earths crust collide and some rock is forced downward.
Magma
Hot liquid that forms when rock partially or completely melts.
Igneous rock
Sand and grains form which then are pushed up to the surface.
Sediment rock
Uplift and erosion expose the Igneous rock at earths surface then is whetted down and wears away into grains .
