2.1 - Responding to change Flashcards
Where are receptors found?
In sense organs
What are the sense organs? (5)
- eye
- ear
- nose
- skin
- tongue
Using the example of light, how does a stimulus cause the body to do something? (simply)
- Light stimulates receptors in the eye,
- causing electrical impulses
- which pass to the CNS and then the effector organ
- along neurons
What are neurons?
Nerve cells
What does the brain do in the nervous system?
Coordinates responses to stimuli
What are 5 examples of stimuli?
- sound
- chemicals
- temperature change
- touch
- pain
What is the CNS?
The central nervous system, formed by the brain and the spinal cord
What do nerves contain?
Neurons
What do sensory neurons do?
Carry electrical impulses from receptors to the CNS
What do motor neurons do?
Carry electrical impulses from the CNS to the effector organs
What are effector organs?
They could be muscles or glands
How do glands respond to electrical impulses from the motor neurons?
By secreting (releasing) chemicals
How do muscles respond to electrical impulses from the motor neurons?
By contracting
What two stimuli do the ears detect?
- Sound
- Changes in position
What stimulus do the eyes detect?
Light
