2.1 Responding To Change Flashcards
How do impulses pass from the receptor to the CNS?
As electrical impulses along a sensory neuron
Define nervous system
The brain and spinal cord form the CNS where information is processed
Define receptor
Special sensory cell that detects changes in the environment
Define stimuli
A change in the environment that is detected by sensory receptors
Define sense organ
Collection of special cells known as receptors which responds to changes in the surroundings (e.g. eye, ear)
Define impulse
Electrical signal carried along the neutrons
Define neuron
Basic cell of the nervous system which carries minute electrical impulses around the body
They are nerve cells found in nerves that carry electrical impulses
Define central nervous system
The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord where information is processed
Define nerve
Bundle of hundreds or even thousands of neurons
Define sensory neurone
Neuron which carries impulses from the sensory organs to the CNS
Define motor neurone
Neuron that carries impulses from the CNS to the effector organs
Define effector organ
A muscle or gland that responds to impulses from the nervous system
Define secreting
Releasing chemicals such as hormones or enzymes
What stimuli are detected by the sense organs?
Light, sound, chemicals touch, pain and temperature changes
