What are proteins?
Meat, fish, eggs and dairy products.
They build up new tissue.
Made up of amino acids
What are carbohydrates?
Pasta and bread and also sugar
They provide energy
What are fats?
Butter margarine, lard and oils.
Provide stored energy if you are not eating carbohydrates
Why is water important?
Allan’s chemical reactions in the body happen in watery environments
What are fibres?
They help to prevent constipation (can’t remove faeces)
They are found in veg and fruit
What are vitamins and minerals?
Required for general health and healthy functioning of the body
What is malnutrition?
Leads to you being overweight or underweight
Caused by not having a balanced diet
If you take in more energy than you use you can become overweight
If the amount of energy going in is less than that being used you can become underweight
What is metabolism?
Chemical reactions in the body that require energy
What is metabolism affected by?
The amount of exercise you do
Genetics determine high or low metabolism
Proportion of muscle to fat
What are the issues with cholesterol?
Toto much can lead to blocked arteries and restricting blood flow
Can lead to artery blockage or type 2 diabetes
What is diabetes?
When you cannot control blood sugar levels- cells do not work with insulin
What types of food are all involved in a balanced diet?
Proteins, carbohydrates, fats, water, fibres and vitamins and minerals
What happens to your body if you take in too much or too few vitamins?
You become malnourished

The condition when the body does not get a balanced diet
Define metabolic rate
The rate at which the reactions of our body take place, particularly cellular respiration
