2.1 Internal Business - Leaders and Managers Flashcards
What is the difference between a leader and a manager?
The leader aims to set the overall direction, purpose, and goals of the business.
The manager aims to manage resources and people to achieve the business’ goals.
What are four different types of leadership styles?
Authoritarian/autocratic
Paternalistic
Democratic
Laissez-faire
What is the Authoritarian style of leadership?
The leader makes all the decisions without talking to staff first and getting their feedback. One way communication
What is the Paternalistic style of leadership?
The leader has the final say and makes the decisions, but includes employee input into the process.
What is the Democratic style of leadership?
When the leader takes into account the views of the employees but also lets employees make some decisions for themselves. e.g. you set employees targets but let them decide how to get there
What is the Laissez-faire style of leadership?
When the leader lets employees decide by themselves what to do. The employee is left to make all of the decisions.
How does the leadership style used affect employees?
Less involvement employees with decisions, the less motivated they might feel.
However, employees need some support though so if it was Laissez-faire style some employees may feel very demotivated without structure.
Employees need to feel involved with decision making to feel motivated, and therefore to be more productive.
What are some of the characteristics of a good leader?
Good communication skills - means that employees know what they need to do, making them more productive and motivated.
Ambitious/visionary - if employees know the direction of the company, they will have more confidence in the business, ‘buy in’ to the business vision/goals more, and then be more productive and motivated.
Strong work ethic - role model for employees, means that the employees will be motivated to work harder.
Inspirational - people look up to them, if they can see the passion of the leader, then the passion is infectious, other people will then share that passion, leading to higher motivation and greater productivity.
What kind of leadership style did Wellington Zoo use and why?
Paternalistic style leadership. Because it involved employees in the decision making process, increasing motivation and job satisfaction.
Paternalistic because it means more efficient decision making than democratic because they don’t have to consult with employees as much first.
What’s the advantages of employees being less involved in decision-making e.g. authoritarian?
They might feel less motivated but the business will make decisions faster/more efficiently because they don’t have to sell employees on it and disagreements take time to resolve.
What is the role of a manager?
To plan and organize people and resources to achieve business goals
What are the types of management strategies someone can use?
Organising - putting the right person in the right place i.e. delegating tasks to the right people and delegating resources to right task.
Coordinating - ensuring different teams/parts of the business are working together.
Communicating - showing employees how well they are going and if they need to change anything.
Controlling - measuring performance and making changes if necessary.
