A

The control theory looks at why individuals my abide by the law.

What is Walter C Recklessness Theory?

A

The theory of containment.

This attempts to explain the ways individuals are socially trained or persuaded to be. He states a combination of both containment’s prevent people from deviating from the social norms and stops criminal behaviour

Inner containment - upbringing and family influences
Outer containment - social groups and their influence (police)

What is Travis Hirsch Theory?

A

The theory of social bonds.

He analyses that using 4 elements/ bonds this promotes pro social behaviour and criminal activity only occurs when these bonds are weakened.

  • Attachments - parents, school, peer groups
  • Commitment - future goals, lifestyle
  • Involvement - activities to keep busy
  • Belief - in values like honesty

What is Rational Ideology?

A

An idea of belief that achieves social control. For example your conscience, guilt or anxiety makes you follow the rules.

What is Tradition?

A

Your own beliefs customs norms or family traditions that make sure you confine by the laws.

For example the 10 commandments state ‘do not kill’ and also individuals may believe in the tradition that bad people don’t got to the afterlife.

What is internalisation of social rules/values?

A

When you work out what is the right thing to do based on social values. For example being honest and respecting elders. Therefore crime would be seen as wrongful due to this.

A

The use of force to achieve a desired outcome. For example prisons threaten the loss of liberty and so therefore prevent future breaking of the law.

What is Fear of Punishment?

A

The fear of punishment is a deterrence which uses punishment to stop people from offending.

Individual deterrence- deters or prevents offenders from committing further crimes (suspended sentence).

General deterrence - deters or prevents others from committing crime similar (lengthy prison sentences and mandatory minimums like life sentences/ 3 strikes are your out in USA).
