What is the Green Paper?
The public consultation document that sets out new idea for law.
What is white paper?
The formal proposals for reform are set out in the white paper.
What is bill?
The bill is a draft presented in parliament.
What is first reading?
The first reading is where the aims of the bill are read out and a vote is taken.
What is second reading?
The first stage/ opportunity for an actual debate and vote to be take.
What is the committee stage?
Where a chosen group or representatives look closely at the bill to address any issues or amendments that seem appropriate.
What is the report stage?
The report stages is where these further proposed amendments become voted upon.
What is the third reading?
Third reading is the final chance to vote on the bill before it becomes a law.
What happens after third reading before getting Royal Assent?
All the stages/processes are repeated in the other house. This process is called ping pong.
What is the royal assent?
The royal assent is the monarchs formality to agree to the law as the head of state.
What happens finally at the end ?
The bill then becomes an act of parliament and commencement date is given for future date.
