21 - Equine Thyroid dz Flashcards
1
Q
(Goiter)
- most common cause in horses?
2-3. what two conditions can affect thyroid dysfx?
A
- benign thyroid adenoma (normal fx)
- thyroid neoplasia (hyperT possible but usually not)
- iodine def or excess (hypoT possible)
2
Q
(Dx)
- usually measure what?
- why do we rarely measure response of T3/T4 to stim?
A
- total and free T3 and T4 (limited testing of TRH, TSH)
- $$$, mult samples
3
Q
(hyperthyroidism - rare)
- only get when?
- Dx?
- Tx?
A
- with neoplasia
- ^ total and free thryoid hormones
- partial or complete throidectomy
4
Q
(Hypothyroidism - extremely uncommon)
- overdiagnosed in horses - why?
A
- low [Th] more likely side effect of non-thyroidal illness syndrome -> still ahve normal thyroid fx
5
Q
(non-thyroidial illness syndrome)
- what is it?
- physiological signif?
A
- transient/reversible hypoT related to stress, illness, or systemic inflam
- no evidence of adverse fx
6
Q
(Fetal/Congenital HypoT)
- what causes this?
- Cx?
- Dx?
- tx?
- prog?
A
- dam’s diet has too much/too little iodine, or ^ nitrates (goitrogens)
- abortion, dysmaturity, cuboidal dz, mandibular prognathism, poorly developed pectoral musc, +/- goiter
- assess dam’s diet (most important)
assess thyroid fx (may be normal by birth)
- correct mare nutrition, thyroid supplements (rarely work)
- poor
7
Q
(IT/Metabolic syndrome)
- why give thyroid hormones?
- what drug do we use?
best use of this?
A
- induce hyperT -> ^ wt loss, ^ insulin sens
- levothyroxine
short term mgmt of severe EMS most common rational use
