2.1 Cells - Multicellular Organisms Flashcards
Structure and Function of a Nerve Cell
Has connections at each end to link with other nerve cells
Can conduct electrical impulses
Structure and Function of a Red Blood Cell
Has no nucleus so it can carry more oxygen
It’s small and flexible to fit in capillaries
Structure and Function of a Sperm Cell
Has a tail to swim to the egg
Structure and Function of a Muscle Cell
Can contract and relax to allow movement
Structure and Function of a Root Hair Cell
Has a large surface area to absorb more water
Has no chloroplasts as it is not exposed to light
Structure and Function of a Leaf Cell
Has many chloroplasts to carry out photosynthesis
Structure and Function of a Guard cell
Open and close pores (stomach) in leaf cell to let gases in and out
What is a cell?
Cells are the basic units of life
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of cells that work together to form tissues
What is an organ?
An organ is a group of tissues that work together to form an organ
What are Xylem cells?
Xylem cells collectively form the xylem tissue that transports water and minerals in plants
How does Xylem tissue work?
It works in concert with Phloem tissue in an Organ called the vascular bundle
What does Phloem tissue carry?
It carries sugars
Where are stem cells found?
They are found in animals and can divide to form new cells
A type of Stem Cell?
Embryonic - stem cells are derived from embryos that develop from eggs that have been fertilised in a laboratory
