2.1 Flashcards
Molecular Biology
Chemistry of living organisms
Organic Molecules
Carbon-based compounds that are synthesized by living organisms
Carbon Atoms
Able to form 4 covalent bonds
Urea
organic compound that is produced by organisms when they break down proteins
It is excreted from the body through urine
Metabolism
two pathways : catabolic & anabolic
Catabolic Reactions
break down complex molecules into simpler ones, which releases energy (hydrolysis)
Hydrolysis
opposite of condensation. Polymers are broken down by adding H2O and breaking covalent bonds
Condensation VS Hydrolysis
Condensation (energy consumed, covalent bond formed, water removed, monomer - polymer)
Hydrolysis (energy released, covalent bond broken, water added, polymer - monomer)
Simple sugars
Glucose (6 sided) , Ribose ( 5 sided)
Disaccharide
sugars are formed when two monosaccharide sugars join together through condensation reactions
Fatty acids
chains of hydrogen and carbon and are the building blocks of lipids and fats. The following are saturated fatty acids.
Phospholipids
that make up cell membranes have two tails made of fatty acid chains
Triglycerides
composed of three fatty acid chains and glycerol
