who are the winners from global shifts?
TNC’s as cheaper labour so higher profits and consumer’s as products are cheaper
who are the losers from global shifts?
factory workers in developed countries who suffer from unemployment
economic centre of gravity
where most of the world’s trade is happening
where was the economic centre of gravity at the beginning of the 19th century?
China
when did Europe dominate the economic market?
1840-1940 after the industrial revolution
when did USA become the dominant global economy?
been on a steady rise since end of ww2
why has the global economic centre of gravity shifted to Asia?
due to the shift of manufacturing as there is a huge supply of cheap labour (price of labour is lowered and the price of goods has increased)
benefits of global shift
- decline in the number of people living on less than $1.25
- new infrastructure built in developing countries to deal with TNC eg new international airport in India
- more jobs (people given education and wages so less in poverty)
- more taxes which leads to improved public services
costs of global shift
- rise in factories which leads to more pollution
- loss of land
- overcrowding due to RUM (thousands living in unplanned settlements so diseases can spread easily)
- leads to public health and education services being severely strained in these areas
- overexploitation of resources and dumping of waste which leads to pollution of local water sources (loss of clean water)
case study of Dhaka, Bangladesh
- Ranza Plaza collapsed in April 2013 killing 1,100
- led to major structural, fire, life and safety reforms
- ## cheap labour $40/ month (pays more than subsistence farming and provides independence for woman)
