A
Japan traded with the West in the 1800’s. Otherwise far eastern countries had isolated themselves from the rest of the world.

In what ways was ancient China an advanced civilization?
A
They invented paper, gunpowder, silk weaving, the magnetic compass, the printing press, clockwork, the spinning and water wheel. They dug canals, built bridges and dams, and set up irrigation systems. They also excelled in mathematics and medicine.

Why would isolating a country from its neighbors help keep it united?
A
It would make the nation carry its own weight without aid.
