2.1 Flashcards
What is the principle of the conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another. Thus the sum of energy is constant
What is exothermic?
-Give out energy
-Delta H is negative
What is endothermic?
-Takes in energy
-Delta H is positive
What is Hess’s law?
If a reaction can occur by more than one route, the total energy change for the reaction is independent of the route taken
What is the standard enthalpy change of formation?
The enthalpy change when one mole of a substance in its standard state is formed from elements in their standard state under standard conditions
What is the standard enthalpy change of combustion?
The enthalpy change when one mole of substance in its standard state completely burnt in Oxygen to form products in their standard states under standard conditions
What is the equation for Heat change?
q=mct
What is the equation for thermal energy?
-(mcT/n)
What are the units in -(mcT/n)
m=mass of substance absorbing heat (water)
c=constant specific heat capacity
T= temperature change
n=moles
